Cytology (ovulation testing) is performed on female dogs during their cycle to help determine the optimum time to breed to improve the chances of pregnancy and also the size of the litter.

When performing a cytology test a microscope slide is prepared from vaginal smears made by inserting a sterile cotton swab through the vulva into the vagina. After the cells are collected, the swab is rolled onto a glass microscope slide. The slide is allowed to air dry and then the cells are ready to be analysed under a microscope.

Usually more than one swab 48 hours apart is required to determine the optimum time to breed.

Cytology provides a quick and minimally invasive way to check when your dog has ovulated without the need of any blood taken.

Cytology is also very good to determine if your bitch is having a split season and to rule out any infections she may have.
